perfect juicy grilled hot dogs - featured image

This recipe delivers juicy, smoky, perfectly charred grilled hot dogs with a crispy snap on the outside, ideal for backyard BBQs and quick meals.

Ingredients

  • High-quality beef or pork hot dogs (about 8 ounces or 225 grams each)
  • Soft, fresh hot dog buns (brioche buns optional for sweeter flavor)
  • Olive oil or cooking spray (for oiling grill grates)
  • Butter (about 1 tablespoon or 15 grams, optional for toasting buns)
  • Water (small bowl for soaking hot dogs before grilling)
  • Condiments and toppings: mustard, ketchup, relish, chopped onions, sauerkraut, BBQ sauce, or favorites

Instructions

  1. Preheat your grill to medium-high heat (about 375°F or 190°C), which takes 10-15 minutes.
  2. Lightly score each hot dog with 3 or 4 shallow diagonal slashes on each side to help cook evenly and release steam.
  3. Place the hot dogs in a bowl of cold water for about 5 minutes to keep them moist and juicy.
  4. Oil the grill grates using a paper towel dipped in olive oil and tongs to prevent sticking.
  5. Grill the hot dogs perpendicular to the grates for about 5-7 minutes, turning every 2 minutes to get even char marks and a slight snap.
  6. While the hot dogs finish grilling, spread a thin layer of butter on the insides of the buns and toast them face down on the grill for 1-2 minutes until golden brown.
  7. Assemble the grilled hot dogs inside the toasted buns, add your favorite toppings, and serve immediately.

Notes

Do not overcrowd the grill to ensure even cooking. Use tongs instead of forks to avoid piercing the hot dogs and losing juices. The water bath before grilling helps keep hot dogs moist. Toast buns last to keep them warm and crispy. If hot dogs start drying out, move them to a cooler part of the grill or lower the heat.
