A happy accident turned into a deliciously warm and cozy applesauce made with pumpkin pie spice, perfect for fall. This easy slow cooker recipe requires simple ingredients and minimal effort for a crowd-pleasing treat.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 pounds apples (about 68 medium), a mix of sweet and tart varieties like Honeycrisp and Granny Smith
  • 2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar or honey (or light brown sugar or maple syrup)
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • ¼ cup water
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
  • 1 cinnamon stick (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prep the Apples (10 minutes): Wash, peel (if desired), core, and chop apples into roughly 1-inch chunks.
  2. Combine Everything (5 minutes): Place chopped apples in slow cooker. Add pumpkin pie spice, sugar/honey, lemon juice, water, and optional vanilla and cinnamon stick. Stir to coat evenly.
  3. Cook on Low (3 to 4 hours): Cover and cook on low until apples are very soft and starting to fall apart. Stir halfway if desired.
  4. Mash or Blend (5 minutes): Remove cinnamon stick if used. Mash with a potato masher for chunky texture or use an immersion blender for smooth. For ultra-smooth, press through a fine-mesh strainer.
  5. Taste and Adjust (2 minutes): Adjust sweetness or spice to taste. Flavors deepen as it sits.
  6. Cool and Store (30 minutes): Let cool to room temperature, then transfer to airtight containers. Refrigerate for up to 2 weeks or freeze for up to 6 months.

Notes

For best flavor, use a mix of sweet and tart apples. Toasting the pumpkin pie spice in a dry skillet for 30 seconds before adding enhances flavor. Letting the applesauce rest overnight in the fridge deepens the flavors. If applesauce is too watery, cook uncovered on low for 20-30 minutes to evaporate excess liquid.
