A potent, homemade immune tonic made with raw apple cider vinegar, garlic, ginger, horseradish, turmeric, hot peppers, and honey. This easy, no-cook recipe requires just 15 minutes of prep and a month of infusing to create a fiery, health-boosting shot.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar (with the mother)
  • 1/2 cup fresh ginger root, thinly sliced or chopped (no need to peel)
  • 1/2 cup fresh turmeric root, thinly sliced or chopped (or 2 tablespoons dried turmeric)
  • 1/2 cup fresh horseradish root, peeled and chopped
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 1012 cloves of garlic, smashed or sliced
  • 12 fresh hot peppers (jalapeño, habanero, or serrano), sliced
  • 1/4 cup raw, local honey
  • Optional: 1 cinnamon stick, a few star anise pods, 1 teaspoon whole black peppercorns, 1 sprig fresh rosemary

Instructions

  1. Prepare your ingredients: Scrub all produce. Peel horseradish. Roughly chop onion. Smash garlic cloves. Slice ginger, turmeric, and horseradish into thin rounds or small chunks. Slice hot peppers.
  2. Layer ingredients in a clean 1-quart wide-mouth mason jar. Start with garlic and ginger, then turmeric, horseradish, onion, and peppers. Tuck in any optional spices. Fill jar about halfway to two-thirds full.
  3. Pour raw apple cider vinegar over the solids until completely submerged, leaving about an inch of vinegar above the top layer. Use a chopstick to release air bubbles.
  4. Seal the jar tightly and shake vigorously. Label with the date.
  5. Store in a cool, dark place for 4 weeks, shaking once daily.
  6. After 4 weeks, taste a small sip. If desired, let infuse another 1-2 weeks for stronger flavor.
  7. Strain the solids using a fine-mesh strainer over a bowl. Press on solids to extract as much liquid as possible. Reserve the pulp for another use.
  8. Add 1/4 cup raw honey to the strained liquid and whisk until dissolved. Adjust sweetness to taste.
  9. Pour finished fire cider into clean glass bottles using a funnel. Seal tightly.
  10. Store in the refrigerator for up to a year.

Notes

Wear gloves when handling hot peppers and turmeric to avoid skin irritation and staining. Use a wide-mouth jar for easy packing. Patience is key—the full 4-week infusion develops the best flavor. Save the strained pulp to make a spicy relish or add to dressings. Always use a clean, dry spoon when taking from the jar to prevent contamination.
