A quick and easy steamed broccoli recipe that yields tender, vibrant florets in just five minutes. Perfect as a healthy side dish for busy weeknights.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 large head fresh broccoli florets (about 4 cups), washed and cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 1/2 cup (120 ml) water for steaming
  • 12 tablespoons olive oil or unsalted butter
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • Salt to taste
  • Freshly ground black pepper to taste (optional)
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder or 1 clove minced fresh garlic (optional)

Instructions

  1. Wash and cut the broccoli head into uniform bite-sized florets.
  2. Pour 1/2 cup (120 ml) of water into the bottom of a large pot, ensuring the water level is below the steamer basket.
  3. Place the steamer basket inside the pot, making sure it doesn’t touch the water, and add the broccoli florets evenly in the basket.
  4. Cover the pot with a lid and bring the water to a boil over medium-high heat (about 2-3 minutes).
  5. Once steam begins, reduce heat to medium and steam the broccoli for 4-5 minutes. Check at 4 minutes by piercing a floret with a fork; it should be tender but still firm.
  6. Carefully lift the steamer basket out of the pot using tongs or oven mitts and let the broccoli sit for a minute to drain excess moisture.
  7. Transfer the broccoli to a serving dish. Drizzle with olive oil or melted butter, squeeze fresh lemon juice over, and sprinkle salt and pepper to taste. Add garlic powder or fresh minced garlic if using. Toss gently to coat evenly.

Notes

Use uniform broccoli florets for even cooking. Do not overcook to maintain bright green color and crispness. Let broccoli rest briefly after steaming to drain excess moisture. Adjust steaming time slightly based on your stove. For extra crunch, toss with toasted nuts or seeds before serving. Season after steaming to avoid sogginess.
