A quick and reliable method to make boxed long grain white rice fluffy and perfect every time, ideal for busy weeknights or last-minute dinners.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup boxed long grain white rice (about 185 grams)
  • 1 1/2 cups water (360 ml)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter or olive oil (14 grams)
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder or onion powder (optional)

Instructions

  1. Measure 1 cup (185 grams) of boxed long grain white rice into a medium saucepan. Optionally rinse under cold water using a fine mesh strainer and drain well.
  2. Add 1 1/2 cups (360 ml) of water and 1/2 teaspoon salt over the rice. Stir gently to combine.
  3. Add 1 tablespoon (14 grams) of unsalted butter or olive oil.
  4. Place the saucepan over medium-high heat and bring the water to a rolling boil.
  5. Once boiling, reduce heat to low and cover with a tight-fitting lid. Simmer gently for 15 minutes without lifting the lid.
  6. Turn off the heat and let the rice rest, covered, for 10 minutes.
  7. Remove the lid and fluff the rice gently with a fork or rice paddle. Serve immediately or keep warm.

Notes

Use a snug lid to trap steam for even cooking. Do not stir while simmering to avoid gummy rice. Let rice rest off heat to finish cooking and achieve perfect texture. If rice is still hard after resting, let it sit a few more minutes covered. Avoid scraping burnt bottom when fluffing.
