A cozy soul food-inspired dish featuring tender turkey wings smothered in rich, savory onion gravy. Perfect for a comforting and hearty dinner with simple pantry ingredients.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 pounds turkey wings, fresh or thawed
  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 3 cups low sodium chicken broth
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika (optional)
  • Pinch of cayenne pepper (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar

Instructions

  1. Pat the turkey wings dry with paper towels and season both sides with salt, pepper, and smoked paprika. Let sit for 10 minutes.
  2. Heat 2 tablespoons butter in a large Dutch oven over medium heat. Add sliced onions and a pinch of salt, stirring occasionally. Cook about 15 minutes until soft and golden.
  3. Push onions to the side, add remaining butter, and increase heat to medium-high. Brown turkey wings on all sides, about 3-4 minutes per side.
  4. Sprinkle flour evenly over onions and wings. Stir constantly for 2-3 minutes to cook the flour without burning.
  5. Slowly pour in chicken broth while stirring to avoid lumps. Add minced garlic, apple cider vinegar, and cayenne pepper. Bring to a gentle simmer.
  6. Reduce heat to low, cover, and cook for 45-50 minutes until wings are tender and gravy thickened. Stir gently halfway through and add broth if needed.
  7. Taste gravy and adjust seasoning with salt or pepper. If too thick, stir in warm broth or water.
  8. Serve warm over mashed potatoes, rice, or your favorite sides.

Notes

For dairy-free, substitute butter with olive oil or plant-based spread. For gluten-free, use gluten-free flour or cornstarch slurry to thicken gravy. Browning the wings adds deep flavor. Slow-cook onions for silky gravy. Stir gravy gently to avoid lumps. Can prep onions and brown wings a day ahead to save time.
