Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups (250g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp ground ginger
  • 1 cup (240g) pumpkin puree
  • 1/2 cup (120ml) sour cream
  • 3/4 cup (150g) brown sugar
  • 1/3 cup (80ml) vegetable oil
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup (170g) semi-sweet chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line a 9×5 inch loaf pan with parchment paper, leaving some overhang for easy removal.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, and ground ginger until evenly distributed.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the pumpkin puree, sour cream, brown sugar, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla extract until smooth and homogenous.
  4. Pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients and gently fold together with a spatula until just combined, being careful not to overmix.
  5. Toss the chocolate chips with a tablespoon of flour, then fold them evenly into the batter.
  6. Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan and smooth the top with a spatula.
  7. Bake for 55 to 65 minutes, starting to check at 55 minutes by inserting a toothpick in the center; it should come out with a few moist crumbs attached.
  8. If the top browns too quickly, tent loosely with foil.
  9. Let the bread cool in the pan for about 15 minutes, then lift it out using the parchment overhang and cool completely on a cooling rack before slicing.

Notes

Do not overmix the batter to keep the bread tender. Toss chocolate chips with flour before folding in to prevent sinking. Use room temperature eggs and sour cream for better texture. Tent with foil if top browns too fast. Let bread cool completely before slicing for best texture.
